The problem
Hiring a mason or an electrician in an Indian town runs on word of mouth, so workers travel for jobs that were already filled and employers call numbers that no longer work. The people who most need this marketplace are also the least served by a typical job board: they may not read comfortably, they search in Hindi, and they are on one bar of signal with a shared data pack.
The approach
Designed the interface around icons and large trade pictures rather than paragraphs, so the app still works if you cannot read comfortably, and shipped every screen in both Hindi and English — searching "मिस्त्री" or "mason" finds the same people. Made distance a first-class field: workers declare how far they will travel and results sort by proximity, so nobody wastes a trip. Registration is phone plus OTP with no documents. Added two-way ratings so workers rate employers back, voice notes so a job can be described by speaking, and kept images and pages small for weak connections. Phone numbers are never exposed in search results or public profiles — contact details are released only through a recorded contact request.
The outcome
A marketplace covering fifteen trades across multiple districts, free to join on both sides, and usable on any Android phone.
